Tea and Encouragement

As we get down to the nitty gritty of this semester, are you feeling tired, discouraged, stressed, anxious? Having difficulty finding time to rest, connect with God, practice His Presence, find His Peace? If so, you are invited to take some time out for Tea and Encouragement. This informal get together for women will take place on Saturday, March 5 from 7-9 pm at Heidi Torres's apartment at 3216 E. Braeside Dr. (The Crossing at Pete Ellis apartment complex). This gathering is an invitation to take a break, drink some tea and sample tea goodies, then spend time sharing with, encouraging, and praying for each other. Please bring your favorite mug or tea cup that you enjoy drinking tea out of, and if you can, please RSVP to Heidi Torres at hjtorres@indiana.edu, or give her a call at 574-849-6283, just so she has a basic idea of how many people plan to attend. If you can come last minute, no problem, just come. And please feel free to bring slippers, too.

Directions: Take Third Street east, as if you are heading out of town. Turn left onto Pete Ellis, the first street after College Mall Road, at the McDonald's and KFC. You'll pass a strip mall and daycare on your right. Just after the daycare, turn right into the apartment complex. Head straight until you have to fork. Fork to the left, past the first dumpster. 3216 is in the building next to the second dumpster, bottom floor, with the ivy leaf mat outside.

Due to popular demand, we will have TWO opportunities for weekly prayer:Mondays from 2:30-3:30 pm in the Charter Room of the IMU andThursdays from 9-10 am in the Charter Room.

Manuscript Bible Study will continue on Thursdays, February the 10th and 24th, in Ballantine Hall 002 from 7-9 pm. Consider joining us for your first time in the new year!

Our prayer mornings have moved to a different day this semester. Prayer will be every WEDNESDAY from 9-10 am in the Indiana Memorial Union. Here are the rooms for the month of January: January 13-Hoosier Room, January 20-Charter Room, January 27-Charter Room.

Manuscript Bible Study starts up again this week Thursday, January 13th, and again on the 27th, in Ballantine Hall 004 from 7-9 pm. Consider joining us for your first time in the new year!

The first all-chapter social event will be a Superbowl party on Sunday, February 6th, at Professor Amrita and Spencer Myers' home. Details to come!

Warm Food for Cold Weather: January 2011 Event

What: Main dish recipe exchange & potluck

Who: You and your female friends, neighbors, colleagues, spouses of academics, etc.

When: Sunday, January 23, starting at 6 pm

Where: Josh and Kerilyn Harkaway-Krieger's home. We live at 3442 N. Stoneycrest Rd, 47404. Take either Walnut north, then turn left on 45/46 (the bypass), or take the bypass north. Unfortunately there will be construction. One light past Walnut, turn right on Kinser Pike. Then, about a mile down at the bottom of a hill, turn left on Winding Way. The second right will be Stoneycrest, an our house is on the right. Our house number is on the mailbox, which can be a little hard to see. Alternate route to avoid the construction: take S Rogers Street (which parallels College/Walnut) north, and when you cross 45/46 Rogers turns into Kinser Pike.

How: We’ll go with the soup, stew, chili theme this time (hearty, crock pot dishes that are easy to transport and keep warm). As before, bring your dish, and the recipes to exchange.

Your task: RSVP to Professor Amrita at apmyers@indiana.edu so that we know how many to cook for and how many recipe copies to bring. Also please indicate if you will need a ride!

Cookie Exchange Recipe Forum

For those who were unable to make the recent cookie exchange gathering, here is a growing collection of recipes. Please email me with any recipes you would like to add (jessfox@indiana.edu)! Enjoy!

Christmas Shortbread,

from the Kitchen of Amrita M's

1 cup butter, room temperature

½ cup powdered/Confectioners/Icing Sugar

1 cup flour

½ cup cornstarch

Instructions:

- Beat the butter in a large bowl until creamy.

- Sift in all the dry ingredients one at a time and mix together until the batter is bonded but still very soft. I usually have to use my hands after a certain point to get the batter properly mixed.

- Using two teaspoons, drop batter by the heaping teaspoonful (you’ll need the second teaspoon

to scrape/scoop the batter out of the first spoon and onto the sheet) onto ungreased cookie sheets and bake at 325F for 13-15 minutes (depending on how hot your oven runs).

- Keep an eye on the cookies and once they begin to turn even slightly golden, take the pan out!

- Let the cookies cool on the sheet for 5-10 minutes, and then transfer carefully, using a large

spatula, to cooling racks to finish cooling.

- Transfer with a large spatula once cooled to airtight containers for storage.

- Optional: gently press candied cherries or a single red or green m&m on the top of each cookie before baking for a more “Christmasy” look. Enjoy!!

Banket Bars, a modification of the traditional Dutch pasty

from Jess F's mother's grandmother's...kitchen

Ingredients:

1 cup butter, softened

1 cup almond paste, shredded

2 cups flour

2 cups white sugar

½ teaspoon salt

2 eggs

½ cup almonds, slivered

Instructions: Combine ingredients in a bowl. Scoop mixture into a

greased 9x13 baking dish, and sprinkle the almonds on top.

Bake at 325˚F for 35-40 minutes. Enjoy!

Neiman-Marcus Cookies, the chewy brown ones

From Malsi Z's kitchen

1/2 cup butter

2 cups flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda

1 cup sugar

1 1/4 cups blended oatmeal

6 oz. chocolate chips

1 cup brown sugar

1/2 tsp. salt

4 oz. chocolate bar (grated)

1 egg

1/2 tsp. baking powder

3/4 cup chopped nuts (your choice)

1/2 tsp. vanilla

Instructions: Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla; mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and soda. Add chocolate chips, Hershey Bar and nuts. Roll into balls and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees. Makes 2 dozen cookies.

Triple Chocolate Coconut Cookies

2 ¼ cups of Flour

1 teaspoon Baking Soda

1 teaspoon Salt

1 cup (2 sticks) Butter

¾ cup granulated Sugar

¾ cup packed Brown Sugar

1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract

2 Eggs

1 cup Semisweet Chocolate Chips (½ 12 oz bag)

1 cup Milk Chocolate Chips (½ 12 oz bag)

¾ cup Butterscotch Chips

1 1/3 cup sweetened Coconut Flakes (½ of a 7 oz bag)

Instructions:

1. Combine Flour, Baking Soda, and Salt in a small bowl. Set aside.

2. Beat Butter, granulated Sugar, Brown Sugar, and Vanilla Extract in large mixing bowl. Add Eggs and gradually beat in flour mixture. Stir in Chips and Coconut Flakes.

3. Place in small balls on ungreased cookie sheet and bake for 10 to 12 minutes at 350 degrees.

Pecan Rounds

from Kerilyn K's kitchen

1 ½ cups pecan pieces

½ cup butter (no substitutes) cut up

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup packed brown sugar

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon baking powder

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

Granulated sugar

Instructions:

Spread pecan pieces in a single layer in a shallow baking pan. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 5 – 10 minutes or until light golden brown. Watch carefully and stir once or twice. Let cool slightly. Place toasted nuts in a food processor bowl. Cover and process till a paste forms, stopping to scrape the sides of the bowl occasionally (mixture will appear grainy).

Add butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, baking soda and baking powder. Process just till combined. Add egg and vanilla; process just till combined. Add flour; process with on/off turns just till flour is combined. Transfer dough to a mixing bowl; cover and chill about 1 hour or until easy to handle.

Shape dough into 1-inch balls; roll in additional granulated sugar. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Use the bottom of a glass to flatten balls slightly. Bake in a 375 degree oven for 7-9 minutes or until lightly browned.

Transfer to wire racks to cool. Makes about 4 dozen cookies.

Some of the less-desirable gifts included Texan ice pops, a frisbee coupled with 2001 world almanac (a gift from 2009 GFM Christmas gathering!) and the "Triple Dog Dare" It's a Wonderful Life Christmas figurine. Conversation Friendship Partner with an International Student:

Anyone interested in sharing God’s love with an IU international student?
Strong outreach needs for international students in Bloomington.
There are 6,500 international students at IU in 2010.

Thinking About Faithdiscussion group

Folks,

A dozen of us had an excellent discussion on Tuesday of Flannery O'Connor's short story, "Parker's Back." Our next meeting is Tuesday, October 12, 7:30 pm -- not this upcoming Tuesday, but the next.
We are planning to discuss another short story by her, "Revelation," which was written just a few months before she died of complications from lupus at age 39. The story constitutes Ch.3 of the volume we have been reading, Flannery O'Connor: Spiritual Writings. I also attach it here.

Who's excited for fall?!? School is starting, leaves are falling(!), and football is in the air!

Markus and Stephanie Dickinson and IU Grad/Faculty Ministry (IUGFM) invite you to join us for a "tailgate" party at our house near the stadium, September 25 from 4:30 to 6:30 to soak in the atmosphere before the Akron game. We'll grill some BBQ chicken, make some lemonade, and you all can bring a side dish, dessert, or drinks to share.

This is an open event for grad students, faculty, researchers, friends and family (kids, too!). Come make some connections with fellow Christians on campus ...or just come to eat good BBQ. Bring your lawn chairs if you have 'em and pull up a seat.

Greetings IU InterVarsity Graduate and Faculty Ministries group!

The new school year has just begun, and your calendars may be filling up quickly. September is also a full month for our IU GFM group; please keep these events in mind and come when you can!

This Friday, September 3, from 7-9 pm, downstairs in the Pour House Café (314 East Kirkwood Ave), we will host a Welcome to Bloomington event. Returning graduate students and faculty will share some of their favorite activities in and around Bloomington. This will also be a great opportunity to meet some of the members of our community. Stop by for coffee, snacks, and some new friends.

Monday Morning Prayer (from 9-10 am) is a weekly opportunity to gather together in prayer for one another, our campus ministry, Indiana University, and God's work in the world. We meet in one of the rooms in the Indiana Memorial Union:

Manuscript Bible Study starts up next week Thursday, September 9 from 7-9 pm in Ballentine Hall 004. This group meets every other week.

On Sunday, Sept 19 (5-7 PM, location TBA) we will kick off our Women in the Academy gatherings. This is a periodic gathering of Christian Graduate and Faculty Women for support, encouragement and fun. Stay tuned for more details, ladies!

The first official social event of the semester will be a Tailgate Party on Saturday, September 25th from 4:30-6:30 pm. This is a great place to meet other grad students and faculty, play some cornhole, and cheer on our IU football team! Hosted by Professor Markus Dickinson (of the Linguistics department) and his wife Stephanie (Statistician). Address: 2301 N. Dunn (just north of the stadium). Bring a dish to share. Faculty Members Tarez Graban and Amrita Myers warmly invite graduate students and faculty to our GFM End-of-Semester Christmas Party on Saturday, December 5th at 6pm. Invites were sent through evite but if you did not receive that and need the address, please email Paula at puckettp@indiana.edu. Party details below:

- Please bring either an appetizer OR a dessert (and your favorite libations IF you desire!) but if this is prohibitive for you, come anyway!

- We plan to do a white-elephant/crazy santa gift exchange. IF you are interested in participating please bring a wrapped, gender-neutral gift of no more than $10 in value and let the laughter and hilarity ensue. If you have never done this, you will soon understand what we mean! This is completely optional. YOU MAY BRING A NEW OR GENTLY USED ITEM.

- We will supply the seasonal music and decor, games, some heavier fare, and additional liquid refreshments

- Bring your appetite, holiday cheer, your significant other, and any other adult friends who may like to attend.

In response to the IU themester, and Dawkins' lecture, some members of InterVarsity Graduate & Faculty Ministry had their editorial published this week in the Indiana Daily Student:

Science and Religion Can Work Together

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, in his lecture at IU on Oct.12, presented a strong and unflinching defense of biological evolution. He also relentlessly attacked religious faith of any kind, particularly Christianity and Islam, calling the biblical book of Genesis the “scribblings of goat herders.” During Dawkins’ talk, Christians outside the auditorium handed out cards insisting that evolution is incompatible with the Bible.

Both views seemed to agree that we must choose between acceptance of legitimate scientific evidence and sincere faith. For those of us who are professional scholars and practicing Christians, this false choice is personally frustrating and cultivates potently corrosive distrust within our society. It robs far too many young Christians of the ability to realize their potential for exploring our universe and too many scholars of the redemptive power God offers for their lives and their universities.

We believe there should be no conflict between science and faith, because God is the author of both. We believe that Christians can and should explore the natural world and have the courage to accept that evolution is the best scientific explanation of evidence spanning billions of years into the past and within our own DNA. To this end, we hope to engage in the spirit of IU’s Themester by hosting an academic discussion, open to all who are interested, with panelists who are Christians and scholars, and who wish to build trust between the academy and Christianity.

Please join us at 7pm Nov. 12 in the Indiana Memorial Union Dogwood Room for a panel discussion in response to the question "Can a biologist trust an evangelical Christian?"

In the beginning was the Word...

Our Grad/Faculty Manuscript Study of the Gospel of John will begin on Tuesday evening, June 9th from 7—9pm at my husband Blake’s office: The Center for Constitutional Democracy, located at Bldg. 624, E. 3rd St. This is adjacent to the newest IU parking garage (where you may park for free) opposite the law school. We’ll meet each Tuesday evening for 7 weeks.

If you are planning or hoping to attend, but have not yet let me know, drop me an email if you can so I know how many manuscripts to print. No need to bring anything unless you’re partial to a favorite pen or highlighter. You can still come if you don’t rsvp…I just need a rough estimate.

I can't wait.

See, I am doing a new thing!

God is clearly doing a "new thing" in our midst. Since he first gave me the idea of gathering together believing graduate student and faculty women at IU, not only have we already had two wonderful meetings, but to date, 18 women have expressed a desire to be included.

Isaiah 43:19 says, "See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

As you have shared your stories with me, I have heard the ways that the academy is like a desert. It is my hope that our time together will be an oasis for you. And that you will leave having met with God and having been refreshed by Him and by the amazing women around you.

Rest for the Weary

In an ideal world, I would love for Easter to fall at an unusually tranquil time of the year. I would have time to soak in the Scriptures and prepare my heart and mind for the remembrance of events that changed the course of my life and all of human history. The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! An empty tomb!

But in reality, and perhaps in the university calendar as well, Easter usually falls during an incredibly busy season. It sneaks up on me when I am weary. This morning as I was crying out to God in my tiredness, He brought to mind one of the first passages I ever memorized. I give it to you this day as a gift:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." (Mt. 11:28-30)

Come to Him and find rest. What good news! An empty tomb. Even better news!
